第１部「神について」定義8。永遠とは存在そのもの。
DEFINITIONS.
VIII. By 'eternity' I mean existence itself, in so far as it is
conceived necessarily to follow solely from the definition of
that which is eternal.
定義
8、永遠性とは、存在が永遠なるものの定義のみから必然的に出てくると考えられる限り、存在そのもののことと解する。
永遠の定義から必然的に出てくる存在とは、神のようなものか。
「永遠の命」、「永遠の愛」、「永遠の仔」など、永遠をうたうものは沢山ある。日本語だと簡単に言えてしまうし、神と無限に関する宗教的意識とは無関係だからだ。神は無限で、人間は有限。
無限の定義も含めて考える。何ら前後、左右から制限されない命や愛は、ちょっと怖いこともありそうだけれど、「存在」であれば、ぞんざいに大丈夫。神こそは存在である。
終わらない何かについて、考えること。これから始まることを考えること。未来と過去を区切らない思考がこれから始まる。
さて、永遠の真実についての説明が続くが、これは英文のみで。持続と時間では説明できないとすれば、初めも終わりもないので、必然的に永遠だ。

Explanation--Existence of this kind is conceived as an
eternal truth, like the essence of a thing and, therefore,
cannot be explained by means of continuance or time, though
continuance may be conceived without a beginning or end.
