第１部「神について」定義２。有限についてだ。
DEFINITIONS.
II. A thing is called 'finite after its kind' when it can be
limited by another thing of the same nature; for instance, a body
is called finite because we always conceive another greater body.
So, also, a thought is limited by another thought, but a body is
not limited by thought, nor a thought by body.
定義
２、同じ本性の他のものによって限定されうものは自己の類において有限であると言われる。例えば、ある物体は、我々が常により大なる他の物体を考えるがゆえに、有限であると言われる。同様にある思想は他の思想によって限定される。これに反して物体が思想によって限定されたり、思想が物体によって限定されることはない。

17世紀オランダの哲学者、ベネディクトゥス・デ・スピノザ（1632〜1677）の主著『エチカ』を頭からゆっくり読んでいこうと思う。本当に単に読んでいくだけである。
原著はラテン語で書かれているが、残念ながらラテン語を学んでから読み始めると、始まりがいつともわからなくなるので、英語と日本で済ます。英語訳は、フリーのグーテンベルク・プロジェクトのR. H. M. Elwesさんの翻訳を、日本語訳は岩波文庫の畠中尚志さんの翻訳を引用する。
早速、第１部「神について」定義１である。
